Dick and Mary Macialek are named the 2002 award
recipient during the annual PSAI Conference and
Trade Show held in Sacramento, California
For the first time in its ten years run the coveted honor went to a married couple. Dick and Mary Macialek of
RichMac systems located in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania received the award during the PSAI Annual Trade Show and
Convention held in Sacramento California.
Charter members of the association, Dick and Mary have served on the PSAI Board and were recognized for their
long and outstanding service to the industry as both an operating member and an associate member.
“I’m proud to be part of this industry” said Dick, fighting back tears. The couple of 51 years began their portable
toilet rental business 35 years ago. Dick recalls beginning with six plywood toilets fitted with cut out 55 gallon
drums that served as holding tanks. Having a need in his own operation for a slide in vacuum system that could go
on and off a pick up truck the pair went to work in developing the portable tank configuration with no thought of
ever marketing it.
Early in 1971 an industry visitor excited about the potential of the system to other portable restroom contractors
prompted Dick and Mary to manufacture the product for other operators and has done so for more than 30 years.
The selection committee made their choice based on a written nomination and fitting the criteria of conducting
business and personal relationships with fairness and integrity. Improving industry image in the business and public
sectors. Introducing innovative approaches to portable sanitation needs. Creating new products, services and
related technology. Leading colleagues in the advancement of the portable sanitation industry and exhibiting vision in
responding to economic and environmental challenges facing the industry.
Dick and Mary received an inscribed plaque and a pewter sculpture entitled The Contract. The sculpture, created
by Gump family friend, Shalah Perkins, depicts a cowboy and a banker engaging in a hand shake. The sculpture’s
base contains a poem written by Shalah.
“ When two men meet, an agreement made. The terms of the deal, the plans are laid. Each man gives his seal by
the grip of his hand. On his word of honor he takes his stand. These days there are contracts all written out, so
there is nothing to dispute about. But if a man won’t stand on his word understood, a piece of paper won’t make it
good.”
“It depicts the way my Dad did business” explained Barry adding “A hand shake was his word and bond and he
didn’t need a contract or piece of paper to seal the deal.”
Andy Gump was born in Claremore, Oklahoma in 1910 and escaped “the dust bowl” with his wife Irma, to
California in 1934. After World War 11 he became a cesspool and sewer contractor in Southern California and built
his first five portable toilets in his garage in 1956. He built the business in the ensuing years and in 1975 handed the
reigns over to his son Barry. The family business has grown to include temporary power, temporary fence and is
one of the oldest and most successful temporary site service operations in Southern California.
