Reflections of a daughter:
“When I was a little girl, in elementary school a classmate
asked me if I was rich” recalled, Nancy. Not understanding
what the term ‘rich’ meant she returned home to question her
father.
“I asked my dad if we were rich and his response was yes, we are rich, we’re rich in
love. That statement has stuck with me throughout the years and even today it reminds me
that of all the core values my dad taught me, it’s how you love and the people you touch in
your life that is important.”
“I never dreamed growing up that I would work with my father, but fate took its course
when I had medication problems in my second year of college and couldn’t finish school.
My dad came to me and asked if I wanted to help him with special events. That was 16
years ago and I have never looked back.”
of few words, but his actions speak volumes on how much love he has, so yes, I am rich thanks to my father.”
Nancy’s husband Matthew was quick to add, “If success was measured by family and love, instead of money,
than Barry Gump is wealthy beyond measure.”
Director of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation says Barry a very bright light
in this world
“I've known Barry for 22 years since I became employed by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” explains Helen
Johnson who serves as the organizations Director of Field Management in California. “Barry and his wife lost their
daughter to this insidious disease more than 30 years ago and honestly, it would have been quite understandable if
they walked away completely from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. That they did not do! It is a special measure of
Barry's commitment that he has continued to faithfully work on behalf of the Foundation's efforts even years after
he lost a child to this disease!”
“Barry has a caring attitude for others and is always willing to go that ‘extra mile’ to give back to the community,
knowing it will make the world a better place, she continued. After a reflective pause she added, “Barry is as good
and decent as they come - and a very bright light in our world! I consider it an honor to have him as my friend.”
Andy Gump Inc.,Operations Manager
praises leadership
Barry gives people the benefit of the doubt (looks for the good first), more than anyone I have ever met. Sometimes
to a fault.... But I'm glad because that's probably the reason I am still here. He has a gift at picking good, dedicated
people (present company excepted).”
“As long as I've been exposed to him, he has always been a visionary, able to see ahead and willing to take us to the
next level. Not afraid to make a mistake. That is one of the qualities I admire the most. He is willing to stick it out
there and also willing to take the heat when it doesn't work. Barry's business and personal belief, if I stop to think
about it, is to help people. Barry always, and I mean always, taught me that if we help people get their needs met,
even if it means not getting the job. They will remember us, as a business and that we personally took the time to
help them, we cared,” he explained
“As a friend, Barry is as caring as they come. As busy as he is, he will stop what he is doing and help that person.
For the person, he really cares.
“Barry does many things today outside of business that helps others, including involvement with PSAI, local
organizations and Cystic Fibrosis. If anyone has earned the right to step back a little, it is he. I am a very task
oriented person and don't spend much time smelling the roses. My expectations are always high. Barry has
exceeded my expectations and is a ‘lead by example’ leader in which I am happy to be a part of what he has built.”
Barry Gump is President and Chief Executive Officer of Andy Gump, Inc., a family owned business started by his father, Massena “Andy” Gump in the 1950’s in Mission Hills, California. Barry was born in San Fernando, California in 1942, graduated from San Fernando High School in 1960, served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, returning to join his father in the family business in 1964. Starting with five wooden portable toilets they built in their garage in Mission Hills, Barry worked with his Dad to build the portable sanitation and septic pumping company from five employees to the current team of 125, operating four facilities in Southern California. Under Barry’s leadership since 1980, the company expanded into additional temporary site services, including Temporary Power and Temporary Fencing and has become the leader in “State of the Art” portable restrooms for the special events and film industries in the Southern California area. In 1990 Barry was recognized as “Small Business Person of the Year” by the Small Business Administration – Los Angeles Region. Barry contributes to the future of his industry by serving on the Board of Directors of the Portable Sanitation Association Industry, partnering with members of his industry to provide services for major events, such as, the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake, and participating in the design of improved sanitation facilities, including wheelchair accessible restroom trailers, solar powered flushing restrooms and three station utility sinks. Barry serves his community as a National Board member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for their research and services. “It is a pleasure and an honor for me to call Barry a
friend,” says Ron Inman of Washington state based
Northwest Cascade. “ I always enjoy spending time,
traveling with or working together with Barry. Barry
actually lives the statement of ‘treat others the way
you would like to be treated.’ He is very caring,
generous, and considerate of others and is the nicest
person I know.”
“Barry treats his employees like friends. This same
attitude carries over to customers. It seems to me that
customers keep coming back to Andy Gump Inc.
because they enjoy being treated that way and because
the company has such a great reputation.”
“Barry is one of the people that when he calls you
make sure and take the call. He has great intuitions, is
fun to be with and you always want to talk to him. If
he is coming to town, you clear the calendar so you
can spend as much time as possible with him. I have a
long working and playing relationship with Barry,”
explained Ron.
“Barry is always doing something for others. From
spending several days each year decorating the
community Christmas Tree to a lifetime of Cystic
Fibrosis service. Last April, my wife Mary and I were
visiting Barry & Patti at their home. Barry offered to
take us along to a fund-raiser for the local community
college. He had dropped a huge amount of money just
for the tickets to the event. I could go on and on about
the many other charitable works I have witnessed him
doing. I cannot think of a more deserving person to
receive this honor as Person of the year. Barry,
thanks for all of the great experiences.”
Lee Sola of Super Bowl based in Colorado shared, “while I have known Barry for a few years now, our friendship
really took off when I had the pleasure of working with him on the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. I had
always admired Barry through his contributions to the PSAI and his knowledge of the industry I love.”
Lee shared that “during the Olympic experience, Barrys' willingness to share his vast knowledge and resources was
one of the great successes of that experience.”
“I think Barry is the epitome of class in our industry. Probably the highest form of praise is that every person from
his organization exhibits the same high class in their dealings with other people. I have never personally had any
dealings with anyone in the Gump organization who was not there to help in any way they can and to share their
knowledge or resources to aid in our success. I think it speaks volumes for the type of people that the Gumps are,
including Barrys' parents. You see the same care and professionalism in Barrys' daughter Nancy and her husband
Matt as well as the next generation coming up.”
“I think Barry Gump is the most generous, knowledgeable and professional person I have ever had the pleasure to
associate with. I feel an extreme sense of pride that I can be associated with an organization that boasts members
of Barrys quality and honesty.”

“I admire my dad for his honesty, integrity, humility and
commitment to family,” continued Nancy. “Even while trying to
build a business, family was important. Granted, quality time was
helping me service some portable restrooms, or being picked up at
slumber party in the Gump truck,” she said with a laugh. “I never
lived that one down at school. I have always been teased for
having the last name Gump, but my dad made me proud to be a
Gump because of what he stood for. He keeps his word, he treats
people with kindness and respect, he asks and doesn’t tell you, you
work with him, not for him and he truly cares. He is often a man
“I have worked with Barry since 1977" says Gary Wood who
serves as operational manager at the North Hollywood facility. “I
have always reported directly to Barry.
