Fred A Cutler, III, 81, of Reno passed away peacefully in his sleep on
Saturday, October 27. The family finds peace in the fact that he is now
with his bride, as he lovingly called his wife, Harriet during their 58 year
marriage. He was born on March 14, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Fred joined the US coast guard when he was 17 and was called “scuttle
butt king” by his fellow shipmates. After his service in the coast guard he
moved to Reno in 1949 and made it his home here ever since.
A driven business man, Fred owned several service stations on Wells
Avenue after moving to Reno. In 1958, Fred and "Hat" purchased Sani-Hut
Company, because in his words “they thought it would be fun”. He went
to work everyday until six months ago. In 1971, Fred was an integral part
instituting, what is now called the Portable Sanitation Association
International, was Director for many years and he also received the Andy
Gump Distinguished Service Award in 1995. He had an inventive mind and
was the first to create a portable handicapped restroom, which is now used
throughout the industry.
He shared his love for his community by joining several fraternal and
service organizations. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite,
Knights Templar and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of
the Kerak Shrine and Past Director of the Wrecking Crew. Fred enjoyed
being a member of the Jesters Reno Court #13, as well. He was President
of the Reno Jaycees in 1959 and was the original builder of the Black
Mariah. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
His enjoyment in fraternal organizations lead to his extensive collection of
Masonic Memorabilia.
Fred Cutler Passes Away
Fred received the distinguished Dooley Newton Memorial Award in 1990, from the Reno Rodeo Association for
outstanding services in support of Reno Rodeo & the promotion of Nevada Western Heritage.
A serene golf course was what he enjoyed most, and he and his bride spent many years together on the course and
in tournaments. He would be frustrated if we didn’t mention that he got a hole-in-one in 1979 on hole number 12 at
the Hidden Valley Course. The Cutlers were members of the Hidden Valley Country Club for 35 years.
Fred is preceded in death by his beloved bride, Harriet, and son-in-law Pat Tholl.
He is survived by his brother David H. Cutler (Marti), daughter, Terry Tholl, son Fred A. Cutler, IV (Lynn), his
grandchildren, Randy A. Tholl (Deana), Julie Tholl DeJan (Dominic), Paul Nicholas Alfred Tholl, Fred “Repeat” A
Cutler, V (Emily), Megan M. Woolverton, and step grandson Cody Hybarger. There are seven great grandchildren,
Dustin, Alexander, Cadence, Eon, Becca, Kaylee and Hayley.
"We love you and toast you, Dad, Grandfather and Great-grandfather with a glass of red wine with ice," says the
family.
A memorial service will be held on November 1 at 1PM at Walton’s Funeral Home at 875 W. 2nd St, Reno.
Followed by a celebration of his remarkable 81 years, at the Hidden Valley Country Club from 2:30 – 5:30pm.
