Informal Portable Sanitation Polling Provides
Interesting Results
Rental Rates Appear to be Moving Upward
According to an informal Journal polling conducted in July 2006, average rental
rates [including additional line items] have increased during the past three years.
Portable restroom rental contractors reported that during the past year, average
rates have increased to $18.98 per week or $81.61 per month based on a weekly
calculation. In November of 2003 the Journal polling revealed an average rate of
$69.50 per month.
While coastal areas of the United States posted the highest average rate it was the Midwest and Florida that posted the
highest gains. During the 2003 polling Midwest and Florida numbers pulled the averages down reporting an average
monthly rental rate at $58.00. The coastal regions posted an insignificant increase as compared to the 2003 polling.
To Sell Or Not To Sell
Not such good news for buyers. Owners of portable toilet rental companies
are overwhelmingly family owned with 33% of all those responding to a
recent Journal polling stating no thanks, we plan to build the business and
pass it on to one or more family members.
The informal polling conducted in July 2006 revealed that nearly 42% have
a long term business plan to sell their businesses in ten to twenty years.
For a quicker turn around about 38% are eyeing selling their businesses in
one-to five years while 20% are looking to sell in five to ten years.
The above percentages include the time frames in which the plan to turn over to one or more family members is to take place.
Growth Confidence High Despite
Industry Slow-Down
Despite a less than banner year, confidence remains high that next year will
produce opportunity for growth. The Journal has no previous records to
determine how well or how bad a particular year might have gone. A number that
many embrace as a guesstimate on growth is 20% a year during the past decade.
Comparing year to date numbers to last year at this time, operators reported
across the country an average 9.34% improvement. Nearly 20% of those
responding to the informal Journal polling reported no growth for the year.
East Coast operators reported that they are somewhat optimistic about next year.
In the Midwest, 92% reported that they were optimistic while 8% stated they are
somewhat negative about the coming year. In the West
Coast 80% have a positive outlook for the coming year
and 20% are somewhat negative.
For the purpose of this polling we ignored numbers that
were keyed in as 60% or better growth assuming these
were likely businesses that may be in their earlier stages
where growth rates in terms of percentages would be
extraordinarily high.

Slight Increase In Driver Compensation Seen
According to the results of an informal Journal
polling conducted in July 2006, the average
hourly rate paid in the United States to service
drivers stands at $13.38. This represents a
small increase of .74 over the last polling which
showed the figure as $12.64.
While east and west coast driver wages shrunk
a little, Midwest wages increased a significant
amount to make up for the shortage along
coastal states.
The lowest hourly wage was found in the
Midwest at $9.00 per hour. In 2003 the lowest
hourly wage was $8.00. The highest wage was
found in the Northeast at $20.00 per hour.
